WT

WT began his language career as a teenager working with foreign visitors at his uncle’s safari touring company. His interest in foreign language led him to pursue a degree in Contemporary English Language Studies and Multilingual Studies (CESL & MUST) at the University of Limpopo. As a skilled speaker of several African languages as well as English, WT has worked as a trainer and translator for both African and English-speaking professionals. WT relocated to London and started working with Communicaid in 2001 as a Zulu language trainer.

Facts about the Zulu language

There are approximately ten million native Zulu speakers living in and around the Kwa-Zulu Bantustan province of South Africa . Zulu, called 'isiZulu' in Zulu, has been South Africa 's 11 th official language since the end of apartheid in 1994.

Zulu is a particularly challenging language to master. Not only is Zulu, like many other Bantu languages, tonal with a complex grammar system, but it has also retained the distinctive 'clicking' consonants found in earlier regional languages such as San and Khoi. Because Zulu is written in the Roman alphabet, these click sounds are expressed through unique combinations of graphemes (alphabetic letters).
