OM joined the British Foreign Office in 1960 and served in a number of diplomatic posts including Abu Dhabi, Jordan, South Yemen, Cyprus and Saudi Arabia. In 1984 he became Ambassador to Libya and he later served as Ambassador to Luxembourg and Greece. He retired from the Diplomatic Service in 1996 and has continued to travel widely, including Libya, the Middle East and the Former Soviet Union.

OM is currently chairman of MEC International, business consultants, and Deputy Chairman of the Libyan-British Business Council.  He recently delivered a Doing business in Libya course to staff at ExonMobil.
