Frankie Ord, European Union Division, Department for Education & Skills

"Communicaid efficiently prepared over seventy DfES volunteers for their role as delegation liaison officers for ministerial meetings during the UK EU Presidency 2005."

The enlargement of the European Union to 25 member states in 2004 brought new challenges for those who work with EU institutions, whether on a regular or project basis.  The cultural diversity in any EU meeting is likely to be greater than ever before. Although exciting, culturally rooted differences can also render cross-cultural cooperation time-consuming and frustrating, ranging from a lack of common language to different concepts of managing, negotiating, and time-keeping—to mention only a few of the challenges encountered in an EU workplace setting.

Working with European Colleagues explores the challenges as well as the opportunities of the cultural diversity that exists within the corridors of EU institutions; how cultural differences are manifest in everyday workplace situations and how these can be best harnessed to make cross-cultural working situations a positive and rewarding experience.
