Deutsch – Facts about the German language |
The official language of seven countries, German ranks as one of world’s major languages. Over 110 million people are native speakers and a further 128 million people use German as a second language in over 38 countries. In Europe, German is most widely spoken in Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg and Switzerland and it is estimated that just under 14% of Europeans claim German as their main language. Outside of Europe, large communities of German speakers reside in the Americas and in pockets of Africa.
Belonging to the Western branch of the Germanic family of languages, German’s closest relation is Dutch but little mutual intelligibility now remains between the two languages.
German is written using the Latin alphabet. In addition to the 26 standard letters, German has three vowels with Umlaut, namely ä, ö and ü, as well as a special symbol for "ss", the Eszett or scharfes S (sharp "s") ß. |
