Facts about the Amharic language

A Semitic language, Amharic is spoken by close to 18 million, primarily in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia where it is the official language. Amharic is written in the Ge'ez alphabet (another Semitic language of the same region), and is called “Fidäl” meaning letter or script. The alphabet consists of 33 letters, 7 of which represent sounds unique to Amharic. Amharic can be especially challenging to foreigners learning the language as there is no established method for transliterating Amharic characters into the Latin alphabet.
