فارسی  – Facts about the Farsi language

Farsi is often used synonymously with Persian.  It can also be referred to as Parsi, and Western Farsi or Irani to distinguish it from the variant used in Afghanistan. Approximately 71 million people speak Farsi as their first language.  It is the official language of Iran.  Today, significant populations of Farsi speakers can be found throughout Persian Gulf countries, i.e. Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Oman and Iraq, as well as the Indian sub-continent, Europe and North America as a result of emigration.

Farsi is a member of the Iranian branch of the Indo-Iranian family of languages and is closely related to Dari and Tajiki, all three of which are considered to be mutually intelligible.  For some linguists, all three are the same language but represent distinct variants.

Farsi is written using a modified form of the Arabic alphabet.
