– Facts about the Hindi language

Hindi is an official language of India, along with a further 22 other languages and is the primary official language of the Union Government of India.  Hindi is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and it is estimated that it is the first language to more than 330 million people in India.  Hindi is also widely outside of India, throughout Nepal, South Africa, Mauritius, the US, Yemen, Uganda, and more.  This makes the total estimated number of native speakers of Hindi closer to 480 million.

Hindi belongs to the Indo-Ayran branch of the Indo-European family of languages. It should be noted that many linguists consider Hindi and Urdu to be variants of the same language, Hindustani, which was the spoken language used before the partition of India and Pakistan.  The split between the two languages remains primarily a politically driven one although differences can be determined in their written forms. Standard Hindi is written in Devanagari script, while Urdu is written in a modified form of the Persian script.  In terms of vocabulary differences, Hindi has visibly borrowed words from Sanskrit and Urdu has more significant Persian and Arabic influence. Hindi dialects are often divided into Western and Eastern Hindi groups, which are then further sub-divided.

Hindi script was based on the Devanagari script and possesses 11 vowels and 35 consonants.
