Facts about the Moldovan language
Moldovan (also known as Moldavian) is the official language of the Republic of Moldova , which has a population of over 4 million people and borders Romania and the Ukraine . The capital of Moldova is Chisinau. Moldovan is also spoken in the Republic's breakaway territory, Transnistria.
While there is some debate over whether Moldavan is a dialect of Romanian, it is widely accepted among linguists that Moldavan is the same language as Romanian. Over 20 million people speak Moldovan (Romanian) as their first language. Due to emigration, Moldovan (Romanian) speakers are widespread around the world. Most notably, they can be found in Italy , Spain , the United States , Canada , France and Germany .
Moldovan is extremely similar to the Romanian language, with slight differences in phonetics and vocabulary. Moldovan's script was changed from Cyrillic to the Romanian version of the Latin alphabet in 1989 at the end of Soviet rule. The Cyrillic alphabet is still in use in the territory of Transnitria . |
