Facts about the Afrikaans language
Afrikaans developed in the 17 th century when Dutch colonists settled near South Africa ‘s Cape of Good Hope . It is estimated that there are between 6 to 10 million native speakers of Afrikaans, most of whom are located in western part of South Africa . Neighbouring Namibia also possesses a large contingent of Afrikaans speakers. S everal hundred thousand more speak Afrikaans as a second or third language.
Afrikaans evolved through the centuries as elements of French, Malay, Portuguese and various African and Asian languages were integrated into the local vocabulary throughout the 18 th and 19 th centuries. Now an official language of South Africa , Afrikaans was considered a Dutch dialect until the late 19 th century when a written system unique from Dutch was developed. This written form uses the Roman alphabet, but, unlike Dutch, follows a phonetic spelling and does not differentiate gendered nouns.
