tiếng Việt – Facts about the Vietnamese language
Vietnamese is classified as part of Mon-Khmer branch within the Austroasiatic language family alongside Khmer and regional language such as Munda and Khasi mainly spoken in India.
Due to the occupation of its territory, Vietnamese has been influenced by Chinese, as a result, a considerable amount of words are directly borrowed from Chinese lexicon. The French occupation during the XIX and the XXth century has also transformed the Vietnamese language.
Today, Vietnamese is spoken by approximately 75 million speakers worldwide. Most of these speakers live in Vietnam although it is also used among communities in the United States, China, Cambodia and various European countries.
