I enjoyed the opportunity to discuss intercultural matters with an expert, receiving input and advice. I also appreciated the depth of analysis.
Mariangela Lupi, UnicreditCommunicaid’s Working in a Matrix Structure programme will enable you to reflect on the benefits, challenges and solutions for working in a matrix environment within your particular organisation and will develop intercultural and interpersonal awareness and sensitivity together with practical communication and self-management skills for you to work more effectively within multiple reporting lines.
As organisations expand across the globe, organisational structures become more complex. Vertical hierarchies are replaced with horizontal structures with multiple reporting lines where the expectation is that work is delivered collaboratively with a less top down approach. For many employees, this means they no longer have the comfort of knowing that their manager sits within the same building and that they are part of a constant co-located team. Many employees in large global organisations are managed by somebody not only in another city, but often in another time zone. Or they have more than one manager, each responsible for different projects or elements of their work. Working within a matrix structure offers organisations many benefits and allows for a collaborative, democratic style of collaboration with the best people with the right knowledge and expertise working together on each project. However, it also adds complexity and ambiguity and requires employees to adapt their mindset and develop new skills and knowledge.
